Critical Reflection

Touchdown!!!!!

I can't believe I can finally write this, but this project is finally over! Don't get me wrong, please; as much as I love communications, media, and journalism, this project has felt way longer than nine weeks. I have always loved watching the behind-the-scenes of movies and series more than actually watching the final products. I always thought that was only a matter of taste; I never thought it would lead to what it did. I have now completed four years of studying television production in high school and two years of AICE Media Studies, and I am now committed to college for a journalism major. Working on this project was exhausting, but most of all it was very special!

As I mentioned in my interview for the documentary, I have been working as the media manager and public relations for the Cypress Bay football team since my sophomore year. Ever since the fall, Friday nights have been in the football fields, doing what I love the most: photographing and telling stories. It was with the football team I learned how to photograph. As the years passed by, we would spend more and more time integrating with each other. Creating a true family!

I have been through numerous downs with this project, moments that I have briefly shared in this blog and moments I have decided to keep to myself. As a senior in high school, I am going through many rapid, MAJOR changes in my life, like moving away and choosing where to go; along with the changes, I also had to keep up with the closing of this chapter in my life (focusing in school and studying for my upcoming AICE exams). Causing a problematic situation in my schedule, making it difficult to take on with this project. On the other hand, this project also fulfilled me with major "UPS"; nothing pays the gratitude of seeing emotional reactions from those watching a piece you made. Over the weekend, as I showed my boyfriend (a football player) the final product of the documentary's excerpt, he told me he had goosebumps and that he felt relatable to the piece.

How do your products represent social groups or issues?

"The Sweat that Runs Through Our Veins" represents all the people that are involved with sports teams, from athletes to coaches and any kind of "helpers"/"workers (photographers, filmmakers, athletic trainers...). It represents them and their will to explain why the passion grows on them; it explains that family includes but is not limited to the blood that runs in our veins. Family can be constructed with CULTURE.
The documentary represents this CULTURE, the cherished feeling created between those who participate and work with sports teams.

How do your products engage with the audience?
This documentary engages with the audience by showing the intimacy of the "behind the scenes" of the Cypress Bay Football team and that it is not seen. Like any documentary, its purpose is to show a piece of reality. "The Sweat that Runs Through Our Veins" breaks the fourth wall within the first scene/interview. I chose to do it this way so the audience feels like it is talking to them personally. This happens with a simple change from the other interviews:
framed the director in the center of the shoot instead of the thirdsThis simple change from the other interviews develops a different way of audience engagement. Like the director is telling YOU, the audience, the story.

How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?
The social media page for the documentary is what develops the greatest sense of "branding" for this project. Social media develops a personality, culture, physique, self-image, relationship, and reflection for the brand. It does so by constantly repeating colors, fonts, and writing style. The same colors and fonts are used in the documentary to annex both "pieces" together and make it all ONE "brand."
Similar to the "brand project" we did in the beginning of the school year (where we made ourselves into brands using the prism), the consistency creates the 'essence' of the brand. Like a person... The colors and fonts help develop the physique; the culture is developed (family).

How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?
As a TV production student, I am used to having to work on very large projects with very limited and harsh time frames, which trains me to work with barely any pre-production. Which is something Mrs. Stoklosa HATES ABOUT ALL OF US TV KIDS.
With the beginning of this project, I made a promise to myself I would not allow this to happen; I would research and focus a lot of my time on research, and so I did. I used references from documentaries we studied in class and outside of class. I used notes from our class lectures and spent HOURS and HOURS trying to find documentaries that had social media accounts hahahaah. In the end, all the research I did turned out to be very helpful and made my whole process easier. I spent less time filming because I didn't need to overshoot because I knew what I wanted and needed. I spent VERY VERY VERY little time editing.
In terms of challenging conventions, "The Sweat that Runs Through Our Veins" does not challenge conventions. The documentary follows after much research of numerous documentaries, meaning that, like most documentary productions, it follows exactly what is expected from the genre.

 MARKETINGGGGGGGGGG...

Although creating thumbnails or posters are not required for this specific project(documentary) I came to the co nclusuion ythat there is no social media account withou a bit of marketing( since that is the whole poupose of social media for this project) so I decided it would be clever to develop a poster!!!!

They are very simple, but they do theur job.

The social media posts take so long haahhahaha

I have been spending the week focusing on those social media posts, and honestly, it has been so worth it.

I love how they have been turning out. SO CUTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. For the past few days, I have been doing the "meet the cast"/"interviews." Like I had mentioned in the beginning of the research process, like the "abstract" documentary series did on their social media, remember?

SOCIAL MEDIA MOVES THE WORLD

As time passed, I lost track of time and what I had to do. So many components for one single project. And now I am running after all the time missed.
Well now, let's talk about what actually interests us. I decided to take the afternoon to create some posts on the Instagram page. Like I said in the beginning, with the research posts, I maintained the same font and colors I used for the logo/profile picture within all the posts. To create a brand identity.

This afternoon in particular, i did the Behind the scnes posts.

The extra point is good

WHY CAN BLOGGER BE SO HARD TO USE SOMETIMES?

Sometimes I feel like i know blogger like the palm of my hand, and 5 seconds later... i cant even change the fount😭😭😭😭

the kicker is going for the extra point.

PG. 1
THE PAPER COMPONENT IS ALMOST DONE, AND I AM STILL OK!

I believe I have said a few times about how scared I was about the print component. WHY? I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA. I believe I was just terrified. But honestly, now that it is mostly done. I can finally say it did not end me, and I am so thankful for it.

I am now only missing some final touches on pg !

REPORTING FROM BRAZILLLLLLLLLπŸ’šπŸ’›

Just like last year, during one of the 9 weeks of the portfolio project, we have spring break. Just like last year, when I travelled to Europe to visit some family, this year I will be writing from Brazil, my home country. I arrived last Friday, and honestly, I have been having the time of my life.

Punting

 team meeting...

But what team? Aren't you working by yourself?

YESSS. But in my Aice Media class, Mrs. Stoklosa plans days throughout the nine weeks when we meet in class with people from other groups who are working on different projects so we can:

  • hear feed bacl
  • hear more ideas
  • see how far other groups are(so we know if we are ahead, late or on time)
  • and just interact a bit
I love how we have these days, so it breaks the silence in the classroom. Specially for me, who is working alone, it can be a bit tedious sometimes.

 MORE INTERVIEWSSSSSS.....

Thruoghout this week I took on the production  process. I filmed another interview with one of the girls. This interview was not an easy one. As halfway through, the voice memo app stoped recording it. LUCKILY, I saw it after 5 mins and was able to fix this BUBU.
Since the extract from the episode i will actually produce is focused on the girls... I decided to do something different. Something I have never done before.

Since I am also one of the girls who work for the team and I have an actual connection to them... the interviews go naturaly and sometimes some natural smiles and conversations can happen. Moments that would origibaly be cut out, and the audience would never see.

BUT instead I decided to alos put a camera ON ME.  This way those canded moments can be aired in the episode.

NOTES I
TOOK IN CLASS

THE ONE THAT WAS LEFT… PRINT COMPONENT

This week we had another lecture by Mrs. Stoklosa!  We had a lecture on the writing component. Which to be 100% honest..  it was VERY MUCH NEEDED! I was so confused my the magazine article. Ofc i took some notes! but i also went and did a little research on a project from a previous year!

As you can see, i had a little artistic moment, and i drew a little lay out with how it should look and i also labeled it with important things i CANT forget like: page number, magazine title, a “by line”…

For my research I went and took a look at this magazine I got from BLUM’S BLOG and CHIAPPINI’S BLOG. They were from my school’s Tv program, which i am also a part of. Mrs Stoklosa said they did a really nice job with their project but also mentioned a few things  they could have done better.

 FIRST INTERVIEW ID OFFICIALLY DONE

The production process has started... my favorite part 😁😁 I absolutely LOVE interviews. And yesterday I started the interviews. And I am sooooooooooooooo glad  it all went went AMAZING. I was able to give great answers, the shoot looks REALY NICE, and although I had to improve with lighting... it also ended up looking very nice...

I decided to start by interviewing one of the football players. WHY? Because since this is an EPISODIC documentary, each of my episodes will be focused on a different part of the team (the players; the managers/athletic helpers; coaches). For my social media, I want to post some sneak peaks from previous and soon to come episodes

Game plan pt.2

WHEN AND HOW AM I CREATING SO MUCH CONTENT?

As I have been working, creating photography and media content for this team for the past 3 years of my life. I have TONS and TONS of content I can use to my advantage and create more content for this project. I used the word "advantage" because this way I can focus more on my interviews and editing. I have found myself with audio problems SO MANY TIMES, and I dont want this to happen again. So the fact that I already have some content I can use for my social media enables me to spend much more time focusing and fixing past mistakes from previous projects. So here is a little schedule on how I expect to spend my time with the creation of my content.

SCHEDULE:

week 4- first in interviews Coach hood and coach wise + players interviews

week 5- managers and athletic aid (water girls) in terviws

week 6 & 7-  gap weeks if extra time is needed or anything happens

week 8- start and finish line edit

week 9- touch ups

Sharing is carrying...

Last week Mrs. Stoklosa gave us a lesson on social media, and within the lesson she explained the importance of constant posting. Whith that, I figured it would be helpful to create a posting scheduleπŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰ and just like everything in the progress of this project... I will share it with you.

Game Plan

HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO FIND SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS NOW A DAYS?

Before actually developing my social media account, I thought
It would be clever of me to take a look at some professional accounts. But I actually had the hardest time trying to find social media accounts. But then I finally found it.

ABSTRACT
 ISNTAGRAM
PAGE
This Instagram feed is very colorful and creative, representing the concept of this documentary. The same colors are shown throughout the whole feed: blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, and red. Which I know is something very important because Mrs. Stoklosa always mentions. The feed consists of posts of all different types of art that are shown in all the different episodes. The fee also contains content on most of the artists shown in all the episodes. The posts also include thumbnails and posters from the piece. This is a very smart way of digital distribution, as it reaches varied audiences. Which is definitely a strategy I look forward to including within my social media posts. One thing i did not really like about this instagram page was the lack of interaction with the audience, lack
of stories, and  behind tghe scenes posts. Which are types of content I want to create within my social media. Mrs. Stoklosa mentioned these types of post in her last lesson. She mentioned their importance and how audiece interaction is always important. It makes the audiece feel like a part of it.

Watching Film...

How to get better? by learning from previous experiences...

This week I decided to go on and watch some documentaries... With the purpose of understanding what I liked, what I wanted to add to my project, and what I would definitely not add to mine. SOOO....... Here we go...

My documentary focuses on sports. The first documentary I decided to watch was "Simone Biles RISING" The first thing I noticed about this documentary was the amount of episodes. This documentary counts with 4 episodes, a plausible number of episodes my documentary could have. This stood out to me because this documentary takes on a very long story that was told in 4 episodes. The episodes were divided as steps of her story, like stair steps. Another thing I really enjoyed about this documentary is how the interviews happen in different places... different locations for the same person in the same episode. It engaging. Still in the interview topic... The producers also went to another level as they got a varied amount of interviewees! Biles story was told from multiple points of view, which, in my opinion (from an audience POV), creates a less biased impression on the audience. WHY? Simply because as many people tell a story, the closer to reality it is.

Next up, I decided to watch a documentary that did not talk about sports, nor was it in an episodic format. You may ask me, "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?" The answer is... I like to create contents that relate characters to the human side. I want to HUMANIZE SPORTS. So I decided to watch a documentary that talks about a topic that touches humans like no other: the m*rd*r of a child. I watched "A Life Too Short: The Isabella Nardoni Case". The documentary tells the story of a five-year-old girl that falls from the sixth floor of her father's apartment building; her mother embarks on a quest for justice and lands in the national spotlight. I decided to watch it mainly to see what editing techniques are used when sensitive topics are mentioned. Like the use of shallow focus during interview shots... The use of edited shound bites... Like cloock sound and people screaming. Especially rapid interview clips where the interviewees say something impactful and then it cuts to a silance. Altho those techniques are used with a sad topic... They can also emphisise topics that altho are happy, they are important to my topic.

 I CREATED MY SOCIAL MEDIAπŸ“Έ

Like Mrs. Stoklosa mentined in class in the beginning of the week: "it is important to create your social media pages soon." So here is the link to my documentaries' instagram page.

As you can see the page is still empty. No colors nor posts yet. But next week I will decide my brands color, logo, font and final name.
I chose Instagram as I believe it is the most used social media for marketing and also most usefull. As any type of contect can be posted from pictures, videos, stories, live streams... It basically allows me to be creative.
Cant wait to see all the post😁

End zone

Because a portion of the project includes media distribution and wanting or not, this is a form of media where I will be somehow distributing and sharing about my documentary. I decided to follow the techniques and tips mentioned in my last post and adapted this blog page to my documentary. OFC because it has only been a week and a half and I still don't have a logo, nor much visual editing. BUT since I have worked as media manager for this football team, I have thousands of pictures I HAVE TAKEN AND EDITED. So I chose to use it as the background image.

CHOSEN BRACKROUND IMAGE I TOOK THIS FOOTBALL SEASON

POST FROM LAST YEAR
EXPLANING MY POST TITLE
 IDEA.
Another thing I decided to do, like a redo from last year, was that I decided to name my posts with football terms to keep it in them since my documentary is on the football team. Last year I decided to do something similar, where I named my posts with parts of the song that inspired me.

KICK OFF🏈🏈🏈

 Welcome to weeek 2!✌

This week we started off with a lecture from Mrs. Stoklosa on the digital distribution part of this project. Where sho focused on social media. We were given tips on how to create constant posting, consistent visuals...  we saw examples of actual films/brands social media, like the FREE GUY INSTAGRAM.

PROFILE PICTURE

INSTAGRAM FEED

In the profile picture, for example, it exemplifies the consistency of the brand's colors (light blue and a bright blue). The collors are also maintained through the feed. The font used in the logo is also used throughout all the posts. The posts also vary between different categories from the film, pictures, videos, teasers, call to action, and posters.

Even though Free Guy is a film example and my project is a documentary. Free Guy does a good job at developing a brand through social media, and the techniques I mentioned above are great examples of what I should follow when developing my brand.

RESEARCH 🧐

As this week was the first one, i didn’t do much extra research on my veneer, documentary. However, i have been working with small docs for quite some time now. But I made sure i reviewed my notes from past lectures before talking on much research.

I decided to do it this way mainly because it took me sometime to actually decide 100% on what i was actually doing for this project. I wanted to get things more organized this time around; las years, in AS, I had many problems because i lacked organization and getting my ideas straight that I ended up having to change a lot of the thing I had visualized last

 Oieeeeeee

Today we begun my A level prortfolio project πŸ™€

In preparation… this week we had lessons on each of our project choices, where Stoklosa showed us samples from past years and then after we had meetings with her discussing more private questions and our ideas.

For this years: i decided to do the documentary project, where i will dive into different aspects a football team on different episodes!

I decided to to this project on them because since this is a project that will take A LONG TIME i wanted to do something that was meaningful to me and in something a felt comfortable around. I have been a media maneger( PR) for my schools football team for 3 years now, so it fits perfectlyπŸ₯Ή

REFLACTION TIME πŸ’πŸ’¬

I am starting this disclaiming that this project had costed me many hours of sleep and tears!

I had always set in my mind that I wanted to work by myself on this project as I did not intend to share the creation of something so meaningful to me with anyone. I always knew It would be A TON of work and responsibility. During the production of my project, I regretted my decision so many times. Now, I look back and I don’t regret this decision, not even a little bit. Even though my project did not turn out exactly how I wanted… I am so proud to look back and see that I challenged myself outside of my comfort zone, I am so proud I did not take the easy way around this 450 points project!

This Documentary has always had the purpose of sharing the human, intimate connections the Cypress Bay Football Team constructs and cherishes.   I always wanted to keep this as CLOSE as possible to reality. I never wanted to introduce fancy staged b-rolls, like I have mentioned in my past posts after our research done in class with the documentaries we watched. I knew I would incorporate a great amount of archived footage and “natural” conversations along the interview. “The Sweat that Runs Thru Our Veins”

, through visual aspects, does a successful job at representing the aspect of family in a non-blood related relationship. The documentary starts with a montage of pictures on a wall, those pictures visually represent the cherished “family” the team has created. I chose the montage of pictures to start the documentary as it is a more sophisticated way to present archived b-roll and also illustrate the close bonds outside of the documentary; a way to show reality.

Touching the human side. I always wanted this project to touch people’s hearts and feelings. My main audience breaks down to young adults (15-23),female and male who are interested on sports culture. I wanted it to break that SPORT aspect of football (i know this sounds crazy, as football is a sports). I wanted it to be viewed as I SEE IT! Talking about this team naked me emotional and noone has ever been able to fell it or understand it; I WANTED TO MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE! I am completely aware that my disgusting audio quality made this major factor almost improbable to happen(as people could barely hear it) But after listening to the critiques in class and reading out discussion assignments on canvas, I was positively surprised to find out I was somewhat successful at this mission. People were able to feel and understand the message I tried to deliver! *happy face*. It made me so happy to see my documentary achieve my goal of interaction with my audience.
As I had mentioned In my previous posts… I always new… since before we started the preparation of this project that I would have VERY VERY VERY limited time with this project. And I knew I wanted to spend A LOT of time in pre production (80% in pre-production). So I took our research in class as a literal preparation for my project (instead of only viewing it as a way of understating documentaries, I actually took notes on what I wanted for MY PROJECT). We watched American Purpose, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Abstract and Op-Docs from the NY Times. As research on the genre I used my notes I took in class. But I spend LOTS of hours researching ways to fix messed audio. I used thousands of different AI programs, watched YouTube videos on how to fix it on Premier Pro… and the only thing I learned was to NEVER EVER record my audio in the camera without a back up. WHY?? Because nothing fixes the messed up audio! As I look forward to refilming my documentary… I took on paying attention to the critiques from my classmates so I can fix my errors!

the DOWN FALL

MY FAVORITE PART IS FILMING INTERVIEWS

(talking to interviwee before filming)

I LOVE filming the interviews... It is always my favorite part of the project.

(setting up equipment)
Ever since the beginning of this project I had one thing set into my mind; My interviews would look NICE and PROFESSIONAL! I checked out a better camera than I usually do, more light than I usually do, and I would use a different audio technique!

(interviewing)
Instead of recording the audio on a mic connected to my  phone... SO I have the camera audio as a back up. I decided   to use a mic connected to the camera (I had heard some   people say it worked better and that I would not have the   problem of the audio not being synced correctly).

80% pre-production

"80% pre-production" is something a learned last year from Jim Guarasci from BECON TV.  Jim said that if we spend 80% of our time in planning and preparing... when it's time for production and post-production we will face LESS problems.

OFC that is not 100% accurate as life happens and we can always face problems (🚨🚨🚨SPOILERR 🚨🚨🚨)

After  running into numerous problems with last year's portfolio... I decided to take on planning!!! I met with Mrs. Stoklosa in the first day( I new I had to start filming SOON as the last game was in 2 days and that would be my last chance to capture b-roll).

During our meeting I presented my desire to do a doc on my school's  football team, as I have been a part of the team for a couple of years, I wanted to show the family side of the team! Initially I was not 100% sure of how to tell this story... But Mrs. Stoklosa πŸ‘ΈπŸ‘Έ had the AMAING idea of telling the story through the GIRLS ( the other managers/water girls)

Because I knew I had very limited time... I chose my interviwees and started writing my questions. I scheduled a meeting with Coach Hood (Head Coach) as I wanted to see if he would be all in for this project. I also talked to the girls who I had chosen.

πŸ‘©‍πŸ’»πŸ‘©‍πŸ«πŸ•΅️‍♀️πŸ“ΉπŸŽž️πŸ“½️

Over the last couple of weeks we have been studying documentaries in class... along with Mrs. Stoklosa's lessons (powerpoints and notes) she also introduced documentaries to our class.

We watched American PromiseExit Through the Gift Shop and Abstract in class and we also watched a few Op-Docs from the NY TIMES

As I watched the docs I took notes from examples that related to terms/techniques/ideas I would like to incorporate into my own doc! Watching the documentaries after as a research method helped SO MUCH when planning my documentaries. πŸ‘€

American Promise
and Roaches' Lullaby had many shots of b-roll/interview (moments where the subjects were answering questions or explaining something but not in an interview setting). I loved those moments when I was watching the docs. I found it NATURAL AND TRUTHFUL. As I learned in class, docs are used to illustrate a "slice of life" and they are NON-FICTION.

Even though I am aware the editor/director can still chose/edit to only show what they want in the final project, I loved how those "natural interviews" felt more honest and more truthful.  I believe this is because of the setting the subjects were less stressed, more talkative, more COMFORTABLE.

From Exit Through the Gift Shop I was inspiredπŸ’ by the archived footage ( specially the beginning montage). That not only inspired me because it shows moments of naturally where ofc they have a camera but, many times, they were filmed by friends instead of a camera person. That technique also inspired me alot, because I was always aware that I wanted to do something withe the football team and that by the time where the actual project arrived I would Only have maybe one or even none games left!

I have grown so much within the past weeks, I learned so much especially with my errors.

I learned how to write a script, so to develop characters, how to manage better my time, how to blog, how to plan accordingly...

I honestly think this project thought me more than how to do a film opening. When I started this project I had no idea what I was doing hahahaha I thought I would hate blogging hahahaha and actually realized i like it A LOT, i just don't post more because I have other things to do (school). This project also taught me a good lesson, IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO CHANGE YOUR PLANS.
Last week I realized I had to change somethings in my story, and it was not the end of the world like I thought it would be.

I want to thank you guys for being here with me through this AMAZING journey, I would have not done it without you guys!

DON"T WORRY I'LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR IN A LEVEL☺

O preconceito velado

HEYYYYYYYY!HOW ARE YOU GUYS? I AM ON MY WAY BACK TO MIAMI !!!!! Today I am flying from Berlin, Germany to Copenhagen, Denmark.πŸ›«πŸ›«πŸ›«πŸ›«πŸ›«

As I flew I took on  editing my film opening. And with that I made some changes:

Because of how my actors look like the film opening is more about UNDERSTANDING EVERYONE HAS PROBLEMS NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE AND LEARNING HOW TO RESPECT THOSE DIFFERENCES AND PROBLEMS.

With that change in mind I also changed the structure/order of the footage. There is a lot of footage I got tight I chose to  no longer use, for example the fight scene I chose not to show, simply because I fought Like it would feel like I was telling most of the story (like a short film) and that’s completely the opposite of what we are asked to do hahahaha SO I FIXED THAT.
